Alcohol rehab in Malaysia, starting with a medical assessment
If you are looking for alcohol rehab in Malaysia, start with one fact: stopping heavy drinking suddenly can be dangerous, so the first step is a medical assessment before anyone pours the drink away. Salus offers alcohol addiction treatment as a 90-day residential stay in Cyberjaya, Selangor, with 24-hour care and medical oversight, a psychiatric assessment on arrival and therapy matched to the person.
Signs of alcohol dependence
Alcohol is easy to explain away in Malaysia, with business dinners, weekend gatherings and the weight of hospitality. In the 2019 National Health and Morbidity Survey, nearly half of male current drinkers aged 18 and over reported binge drinking. Families tend to notice these signs.
- The amount has crept up: a glass has become half a bottle, and weekends have become weeknights.
- The first drink comes at the same time every day, and plans that would get in its way are cancelled.
- Drinking is hidden: bottles in odd places, drinks before an event, vague answers about where the evening went.
- Shaking hands, sweating, anxiety or poor sleep in the morning that settle after a drink.
- Promises to cut down are made, meant and broken.
- Hobbies, friends and responsibilities have fallen away, and the drinking carries on despite health warnings, trouble at home or problems at work.
How alcohol treatment works at Salus
Because stopping alcohol carries medical risk, the first job is a medical review, alongside a psychiatric and a psychological assessment. Together they lead to a diagnosis, and the diagnosis decides the therapy. Our medical team manages withdrawal safely and comfortably, and psychiatrists and psychologists work together on the depression, anxiety, trauma and poor sleep that so often sit under heavy drinking.
01
A conversation and assessment
A clinician speaks with the person, in person or by phone, to understand what is needed, including how much they drink and what happened when they last tried to stop.
02
Withdrawal managed by the medical team
On arrival the medical team manages withdrawal safely and comfortably, with 24-hour care and medical oversight. The first weeks centre on sleep, food, routine and medical review.
03
Therapy that fits the person
Therapy is drawn from CBT, REBT, SFBT, motivational interviewing and trauma-focused work, chosen by the diagnosis and reviewed every week.
04
Family sessions and education
Drinking affects the whole household. Family sessions help relatives understand what is happening and what helps.
05
A plan for life after
A Salus Clinician plans recovery with the guest across six areas of life, alongside medical care, and the stay ends with a written aftercare plan.

Is it dangerous to stop drinking suddenly?
It can be. After years of heavy daily drinking, the brain has adjusted to alcohol, and removing it suddenly can cause shaking, a racing heart and anxiety within hours. In some people it goes further, to seizures or to delirium tremens, a state of severe confusion, hallucinations and fever. Cleveland Clinic says seizures are most likely 24 to 48 hours after the last drink, and that about 5 to 10 per cent of people who develop delirium tremens die from it.
Not everyone who drinks heavily has severe withdrawal. NIAAA says up to half of people with alcohol use disorder have some withdrawal symptoms when they stop, and a small proportion need medical care and monitoring. It is hard to judge from the outside which person you are looking at, which is why an assessment comes first. Mild cases can sometimes be treated with medication outside hospital, while severe withdrawal needs hospital care. If someone has a seizure, is confused or is hallucinating after stopping, call 999.
How long does alcohol addiction treatment take, and why 90 days?
Withdrawal symptoms tend to peak 24 to 72 hours after the last drink, though Cleveland Clinic notes that some symptoms can continue for weeks. The longer work begins once the body is safe. Low mood, poor sleep and cravings can linger well after the physical symptoms settle, and they are treated in their own right.
The US National Institute on Drug Abuse says most people need at least three months in treatment to make a significant change, with better results from longer stays. That is the thinking behind 90 days at Salus: a few days for medical safety, weeks for sleep, routine and therapy, and time to practise ordinary life with support around you. NIAAA also reports that most people with alcohol use disorder reduce or resolve their drinking over time.
How do I help someone who does not want to stop drinking?
Choose a calm moment, not an argument, not when they have been drinking, not late at night. Say what you have noticed and how it makes you feel: "I have noticed you are drinking most nights and I am frightened" is hard to argue with. Expect denial or anger, repeat your concern once, and leave the door open. Families often need several conversations over weeks.
It helps to have spoken to a treatment provider first, so that getting help is a specific place with a cost and a next step. You do not need the person's agreement to call us. Please do not push them to stop suddenly on their own if they drink heavily every day. Once someone is here, family sessions are part of the programme, and you can call us for advice before that.
Questions families ask.
What does alcohol rehab cost, and what does the fee include?
The price is RM7,000 per month and it is all-inclusive, so the 90-day programme comes to about RM21,000. You are paying for the room, meals, 24-hour care and medical oversight, individual and group therapy, family sessions and aftercare. There are no hidden extras, and payment plans can be discussed when you get in touch.
Does he need to be an alcoholic before we call?
No. Many people who are dependent still hold down a job. Clinicians use a checklist of 11 symptoms, and NIAAA says two or more within a year is alcohol use disorder, rated mild at two or three, moderate at four or five and severe at six or more. You do not need a diagnosis to call. An assessment is how you find out.
What happens when we first call Salus?
You speak to our admissions team in a confidential conversation, with no pressure and no obligation. A clinician then speaks with your family member, in person or by phone, to understand what is needed. If a stay makes sense, we agree a date, and you are welcome to come with them on arrival.
What happens after the 90 days?
Leaving is planned from the first week. A written aftercare plan sets out continued counselling, a support group and what the first months at home will look like, including the people and situations where drinking used to happen. Families are part of that plan, and support continues after the person has left.
Will people at work or in our community find out?
Only if you or he tell them. Inside the retreat he is a guest of the hotel like any other, and clinical information stays with the care team. The first call to us is confidential too, so who knows about the stay is the family's decision.
